roofing AI visibility tracking

Quick answer: Roofing companies can track AI search visibility for free. Run a monthly prompt test in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode, and turn on Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report. Google Search Console’s new generative AI report, launched in June 2026, is reaching UK sites first.

Why Roofing Companies Need to Track AI Answers Now

Homeowners now ask AI tools for roofer recommendations before they open the map pack. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or other generative AI tools for local business recommendations.

Google’s own AI is growing fast too. Google says AI Mode passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter.

Rank tracking doesn’t cover this. Your roofing company can rank third in the map pack and still be missing from the three or four companies an AI answer names. The only way to know is to check the answers directly.

Free Tool 1: The Monthly Prompt Test

The simplest AI visibility tracker is a spreadsheet and 30 minutes a month. Ask each AI tool the same questions a homeowner would, then log which roofing companies it names.

Use these five prompts, swapping in your city:

  1. “Best roofing company in [city]”
  2. “Who should I call for a roof leak in [city]?”
  3. “Roof replacement companies near [city] with good reviews”
  4. “Who handles storm damage roof insurance claims in [city]?”
  5. “Is [your company name] a good roofer?”

Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode. Use a private browser window and stay logged out, so past searches don’t skew the answers.

Log the results in a simple table:

Prompt Tool Your company named? Companies named Sources cited
Best roofing company in [city] ChatGPT Yes / No List them Reviews site, GBP, your site

The “Sources cited” column matters most. It shows which sites AI tools trust for your market, whether that’s your website, your Google Business Profile, or a review site. That tells you where to focus.

Prompt 5 checks what AI tools say about you directly. If that answer shows wrong hours, an old address, or a stale complaint, fix those first.

Free Tool 2: Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance

Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report on February 10, 2026. It’s a free, first-party report that shows when AI answers cite your pages.

It covers Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. The report shows:

  • Total citations: how often your pages appeared as sources in AI answers
  • Cited pages: which of your URLs got cited, page by page
  • Grounding queries: sample phrases the AI used when it pulled your content
  • Trends: how citations change over time

For a roofing company, the cited pages list is the useful part. If AI answers cite your roof replacement page but never your storm damage page, you know which page needs work.

Two limits to know. Bing says the data is a sample of overall citation activity. It also doesn’t show where your page ranked inside the answer.

Setup takes about 10 minutes. If your site is already verified in Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools can import it.

Free Tool 3: Google Search Console’s Generative AI Report

Google launched a Search Generative AI performance report in Search Console on June 3, 2026. It shows impressions when your pages appear as citations in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover’s AI features.

The catch: it rolled out first to a subset of UK site owners, and Google hasn’t dated the U.S. rollout. Check your Search Console account for a Generative AI section, but most U.S. roofing companies won’t see it yet.

When it reaches you, know what it can’t show. The report counts impressions only. It has no clicks, no click-through rate, no position, and no query data, and its data starts May 18, 2026 with no backfill.

Until then, your regular Search Console Performance report still counts as your baseline. Watch for pages whose impressions climb while clicks stay flat. That pattern often means an AI answer is showing your content and settling the question without a click.

When a Paid AI Visibility Tracker Is Worth It

Most single-location roofing companies don’t need a paid AI tracker. The monthly prompt test and Bing’s report cover the basics for free.

Paid trackers start to make sense in three cases:

  • Several locations or service areas. Testing five prompts in three tools across ten cities by hand takes too long.
  • Weekly tracking during a push. If you’re rebuilding pages to win AI citations, you need faster feedback than once a month.
  • Competitor tracking. Paid tools can show which roofing competitors AI answers name most often and which sources they cite.

Major SEO platforms such as Ahrefs and Semrush now sell AI visibility features alongside their rank trackers. Compare them on three things. Check which AI tools they cover, whether they track local prompts by city, and whether they show cited sources, not just mentions.

How to Read Your Results

Your tracking log is a diagnosis, not a fix. Each pattern in it points to a different part of your marketing.

What your log shows What it usually means Where to look next
Competitors named, their Google Business Profiles cited Their profiles give AI clearer facts than yours Roofing Google Business Profile
AI names you, but Bing shows few cited pages AI trusts your profile and reviews, not your website Roofing SEO
AI gets your hours, address, or services wrong Your listings don’t match across the web Your website, profile, and directory listings
You’re missing from every tool and every prompt AI has too few clear facts about your company Roofing AEO services

Track the same prompts every month so you can see whether changes move the results. One month of data shows where you stand. Three months show a trend.

Fixing what the log finds is answer engine optimization work. Our roofing AEO services page explains how we approach it.

FAQs About Tracking AI Search Visibility for Roofers

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my roofing company?

Ask it. Run prompts like “best roofing company in [city]” in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode once a month, logged out in a private window.

Log whether your company appears, which competitors appear, and which sources each answer cites. That log shows your visibility trend over time.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews data?

Google launched a generative AI performance report in Search Console on June 3, 2026, covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. It shows impressions only, with no clicks, position, or query data. It rolled out first to UK site owners, and Google hasn’t dated the U.S. rollout yet.

What does Bing’s AI Performance report show?

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows how often your pages get cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries. It lists total citations, which pages got cited, and sample grounding queries. Bing notes the data is a sample and doesn’t show where your page appeared inside the answer.

Do roofing companies need a paid AI visibility tool?

Most single-location roofing companies don’t. A monthly prompt test plus Bing’s free report covers the basics.

Paid trackers make sense when you serve many cities or need weekly tracking during a content push. They also show which competitors AI answers name most often and which sources they cite.

How often should a roofing company check its AI visibility?

Once a month is enough for most roofing companies. Run the same five prompts in the same three AI tools each time, logged out, so results stay comparable.

Check Bing’s AI Performance report on the same day. After three months, you’ll have a trend that shows whether your visibility is rising, flat, or falling.

Get Named in the Answers Homeowners Read

Tracking shows you where you stand. Getting named takes a website, profile, and reviews that give AI tools clear facts about your roofing company.
